Our Advancing Equity Framework is a persistently disruptive action-based framework built around four core principles. With this framework we seek to redistribute access and opportunity to fairness and justice in education by changing and challenging micro and macro school practices and policy.
Developing an ever-increasing sensitivity to inequity, we create a way of being that enables us to detect even slight occurrences and to make the necessary changes to ensure our practices are continually advancing equity.
Our framework draws on decades of collective experience and robust research from the Class 13 team. We have distilled theory from educational thinkers such as bell hooks, Paulo Freire, Beverly Daniel Tatum and Paul Gorski. As well as insights from reports by the YMCA, Runnymede Trust and the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition.
Bolstered further by engagement with over 500 education professionals during the past four years, our framework lastly draws on The National Curriculum Framework and Ofsted’s joint emphasis on promoting social and cultural development.
Class 13’s mission is to put equity and relationships at the heart of education. Our principles make this an reality.
Engaging with and questioning the world around us.
Actively recognising and valuing each person’s unique identity and experiences.
Valuing everyone’s voice, understanding that teachers’ authority and young people’s freedom are not at odds with each other.
Everyone—teachers and young people alike—shares responsibility for creating a meaningful and enriching learning environment.
Each principle is interconnected, and designed to create an inclusive, supportive educational environment for all.
Many schools have values, but these are often used to control and hold young people accountable. However, these value-based “rules” rarely apply to the adults, creating a double standard and a confusing learning environment.
At Class 13, our principles build on existing efforts like Identity Curriculums, Project-Based Learning, and School Councils. What sets us apart is our commitment to applying these principles across all school activities—from hiring and staff assessments to parent involvement. This holistic integration transforms values into daily practices that foster equity and inclusion for everyone in the school community.
